Teachers: To post a naked picture or have students as Facebook friends?

So the school district will likely look into their Social Media Policy and have the may have a conservative reaction: Teachers cannot be friends with their students (they now allow it at the moment).

What do teachers think about this?   There is certainly a value to engaging with youth via social media as you can share with them key articles to supplement their education or motivate them to keep working hard.  However, you cannot post a naked picture of yourself because it may get you into trouble.

Okay, maybe that is a little obvious.  But consider your personal life on Facebook. If you post about your wild weekend with friends, should your students know that about you?

Whats your policy?  Do you remove yourself from Facebook all together? Do you stay away from your students and refuse to engage with them online?

Simple Ratio to Help You Build Your Following!

Before I go into this particular strategy, I must give credit where credit is due.  I was reminded of this concept a couple of weeks back during a presentation that one of my clients, the William Paterson University Small Business Development Center hosted, called Social Media in Business (Click here for next date).   The forum was hosted by Sean Carroll-who is enthusiastic entrepreneur who is passionate about helping others achieve fulfillment in life through his coaching and public speaking. Lets be realistic, in today’s day and age, your Facebook Profile is just the most recent tool hacked.   With all the 3rd party applications we used like birthday calendars, Mafia Wars, and Farmville, it is no wonder that there are people out there just waiting for you to take a wrong turn. It happens with credit cards, your email, your identity. Essentially anything that uses personal information can be used for malevolent reason (no one is going to hack your credit account and deposit money…). Secure your Browsing on Facebook

You might think Facebook doesnt care about your privacy, does not mean you shouldn't use the features they offer to keep you as secure as possible.

Have you ever noticed how banks always talk about how you can log in at all sorts of public places, always touting how secure their pages are?  Ever notice how Facebook never outright says how to be secure unless you dig for it?  Well Facebook has an obscure feature that allows you to protect your profile as you browse through the website.   It is called secure browsing (who would’ve thought?).  It allows you to browse its pages via secure browsing which can be visually detected by looking at the address bar and noticing the http:// portion of the address.  If it is secure, you will notice a https, if not, it will be http.   The https is equal to the small lock that appears on banking pages like Chase, where browsing is secure, especially when you log-in. Facebook Advice: Keep a Sharing Mindset!

         Facebook Fan Pages allows you to separate your cause and/or brand from your personal profile.   One of the things that I advocate that my clients to do is plan to post certain content such as educational articles, events and pictures or video.   On the other hand, they should post about the kind of day-to-day work they are conducting for the business.   For example, “Just left a meeting with the Mayor about working together for the 4th ward community”, “Coming from a lunch meeting, I noticed that there is 10% off all printing at Staples”. If you have a “Facebook moment” mindset like I do, post about the different experience you are having around your own business.  This generally prompts people to respond to those post, which increase post feedback (Edgerank) and increases the frequency and likelihood people will see all of your post (increasing daily impressions). These can all be track via Facebook Insights.

Facebook vs. the Social Media World: Are we peasants caught between dictators?

Facebook is not too comfortable in their high class status with the fickle loyalty of their users in our instant gratification prone society.  Most people enjoy using Facebook for a variety of reasons, some even making a living in teaching others how to use it.  Though I enjoy some of the recent upgrades, I am beginning to feel like a peasant torn between two dictators.  I personally do not use Google + as all my clients find their target base on Facebook. However, the recent upgrades in Friend Lists, privacy settings and the reborn subscribe feature in Facebook seeks to keep their users from defecting.
